Honoring Dr. Penelope Porter
Dr. Penelope Porter was the founder of Ajo Veterinary Clinic, an inspiration to many that new her, and like a second mom to many of us at the clinic. She dedicated her life to veterinary excellence and creating a hospital that would exemplify that dedication. She took excellent care of her clients, patients, community, and her team here at the hospital. Our goal is to continue that legacy as we continue to grow our team, serve our community, and build on the hospital she was so proud of.
Dr. Penelope Porter
Dr. Penelope Porter (Iowa State ’69), a renowned figure in the veterinary community of South Tucson and a steadfast advocate for animal welfare, passed away Feb. 15, 2024. Dr. Porter embarked on her veterinary journey as one of the first six women to graduate from Iowa State’s veterinary program.
In 1973, Dr. Porter founded the Ajo Veterinary Clinic in South Tucson, a practice she nourished from a single doctor practice that shared a building with a bar into a multi doctor, AAHA certified practice. Ajo Veterinary Clinic quickly became a cornerstone of veterinary excellence and community service under her leadership. Throughout her illustrious career, Dr. Porter was committed to providing compassionate care, advancing veterinary medicine, and mentoring the next generation of veterinarians and veterinary professionals. Her contributions to veterinary science and animal welfare have left an indelible mark on the community and the profession.
Dr. Porter was an active member of the American Veterinary Medical Association and SAVMA, where she contributed her expertise and passion for animal health. Her work was characterized by a deep commitment to her patients, their families, her staff, and the broader community, earning her widespread respect and admiration.
She is survived by her sister. Memorials may be made to Helping Every Animal Receive Treatment Southwest’s Dr. Penelope Porter fund, reflecting Dr. Porter‘s lifelong dedication to animals.
